Private Alexander Hamilton Willard
Born: August 24, 1778, Charleston, New Hampshire
Willard enlisted in the Army in Kentucky in 1778. He served as an artificer - a skilled
workman responsible for maintaining weapons and equipment.
Private Willard transferred to the Corps of Discovery Jan. 1, 1804 at Camp Dubois. He
served the expedition as blacksmith, gunsmith and hunter.
In July of 1804 Willard fell asleep while on guard duty. He was cout-martialed and
sentenced to receive, depending on accounts, either 100 lashes or four sets of 100 lashes.
