Sacagawea

Born: about 1788

Sister of Cameawait, who became chief of a Shoshoni band by 1805. Captured by the
Minnitaree when she was twelve. Later one of Toussaint Charbonneau's wives.

Valuable guide in the upper Missouri country. Virtuous, modest, unexcitable. Her son, Jean
Baptiste Charbonneau, was born February 11, 1805 and she carried him on the expedition
to the Pacific and back.
